I took a look at the pilot episode and got half way through it because I started it too late at night for an old working guy. I'm not hooked on it, though. It's quite cliched, although it has no pretense for being anything else so that's okay. The younger brother Rusty makes the best first impression and reminds me of the naive pledge, Larry Kroger, in Animal House. Unlike Veronica Mars that had an edge as well as mysterious activities at the core, this show didn't present anything really interesting in the first 30 minutes to keep my attention. The interpersonal conflicts it tried to set up were pretty pedestrian. I may give it another shot, though. It usually takes me a few episodes of any new show to win me over.
I think all your criticisms are valid and accurate. The show reminds my of many teen romance comedies from the 80s. It is silly, and a bit cliché, but that doesn't automatically turn me off...if it is done right.
One thing that helps is the fact that the characters are not as "one dimensional" as they first appear. There is some obvious foreshadowing of this with comments like, "I'm not just her sidekick" or "I'm not just the girl that is her enemy for no other reason than it being the role I'm pegged to play"...but it can take a while for those story lines to be flushed out.
I also like the fact that unlike other shows currently in this genre (Gossip Girl comes to mind) there isn't so much teen angst...and the characters aren't taking themselves so seriously.
I've always been a sucker for "coming of age" stories...so even rather pedestrian interpersonal conflicts can keep me just as interested as life and death conflicts. BTW...I loved the first season of Veronica Mars... great show...at least for the first season.
